The UHH Research Park includes the headquarters for the East Asian Observatory, the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, Subaru, Gemini, UKIRT, the Smithsonian Submillimeter Array and the Institute for Astronomy, plus the astronomers at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. We are one of the major centres for astronomy in the world and encourage all visitors to the JCMT to take advantage of the proximity of these institutes, and give a seminar while in Hilo. Groundbreaking images of the Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH) M87* and Sagittarius A* by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) motivate a robust theoretical understanding of accretion flows near SMBHs. General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations are one of the best tools to build this understanding; however, many simplifying assumptions are made to reduce computational cost. One such assumption is initially aligned accretion disks, which may not hold true for M87* and Sagittarius A*. In this talk, I will provide an overview of my PhD thesis focused on modelling accretion flows misaligned with respect to the black hole spin axis. I will describe how the strength of the magnetic field, and the black hole spin influence the evolution of a misaligned accretion disk. I will also show how signatures of disk misalignment are imprinted on EHT-style images of misaligned SMBHs and compare my simulations to EHT observations of Sagittarius A* from 2017.<\/div>\n

EAO seminars are (usually) held in the second floor conference room at the East Asia Observatory, 660 N. A’ohoku Place, Hilo, Hawaii. Please note that access to EAO is possible only through the main entrance (through the side doors facing Subaru). However since COVID we encourage astronomers to join via zoom.<\/p>\n
